If you’ve searched online for “Hair Loss and Vitamin D,” then you may be familiar with the concept we’re exploring today. Hair loss can occur for a variety of reasons but many people don’t think about Vitamin and mineral deficiencies. There is evidence that shows a Vitamin D deficiency can affect healthy hair growth. Let’s explore how Vitamin D fits into the hair growth process.

Vitamin D plays a part in many processes in the body. It’s an essential fat-soluble vitamin but, unlike most vitamins, it’s not commonly found in foods. It can be found in soy, milk and specific kinds of fish. Vitamin D is also produced endogenously when UV rays from the sun contact your skin.

Although the specific role Vitamin D plays in hair growth isn’t well understood, research shows people who are deficient in Vitamin D often experience some degree of hair loss. This deficiency may also be linked to alopecia areata, or spot baldness, according to one study. The study found that women 18 to 45 years old who experienced alopecia or other types of hair loss had low levels of Vitamin D. It is believed Vitamin D plays a role in stimulating new and old hair follicles. When there’s not enough of the vitamin in the body, growth may be stunted. Lack of Vitamin D can also contribute to other health conditions such as low bone density, bone softening, cancer and heart disease.

People with Vitamin D deficiency may have no symptoms, while others may. Symptoms of Vitamin D deficiency include:

  • Changes in mood
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Frequent fractures
  • Constant fatigue
  • Loss of bone density
  • Slow wound-healing
  • Bone pain
  • Muscle weakness, aches or cramps

If you have a Vitamin D deficiency, try getting some more sunshine and incorporate foods with Vitamin D into your diet. A simple Google search will give you a list of foods that may help. You can also try Vitamin D supplements in pill or cream form. When it comes to hair loss, contact a trichologist or speak to your doctor about your options. Treatments for alopecia areata include steroid injections and creams. If you’re in the Tampa, FL area, contact Emerge Trichology to help with your Vitamin D-related hair loss.
