Microneedling as an anti-aging skin treatment is a rising star in the cosmetic industry. But decades before the availability of consumer-based micro-needling beauty products, it was being used as one of the most effective and non-invasive therapies for hair restoration. Working much in the same way as the now popular microneedle derma roller which punctures the skin in order to produce collagen, and as a result a much brighter skin in appearance, micro-needle therapy for hair restoration stimulates the hair follicles to produce the elastin and collagen that, ultimately, encourages growth. This is done by creating tiny wounds in the scalp that prompts the body’s defense mechanism to perform its healing powers.

So, how exactly does microneedling therapy stimulate hair growth? First, you’ll need to consult with a trichologist about the best microneedling therapy for your hair loss needs. Then, on treatment day your trichologist will do the following: Cleanse your scalp along the area that you would like treated. Then apply a topical serum to numb the area so as to avoid any pain. And finally, the microneedling takes place by puncturing the skin using an electric skin needling pen. When complete, a topical balm will be applied. The procedure, depending on the area to be treated, takes approximately 45 minutes to an hour in total. You may experience some minor side effects such as skin irritation and redness. Results can be detected within three to six months.

The good news is that clinical research has repeatedly shown it to be an effective treatment for individuals experiencing thinning hair or hair loss. Common disorders causing such hair loss include androgenic alopecia and alopecia areata. If you suffer from one of these conditions or if you’re seeking hair growth, a licensed trichologist can customize a treatment plan just for you.
