Did you know that some hair loss can be triggered by birth control and hormones? Today we’re going to dive deeper into this topic and understand the how, why and what to do about birth control and hormone-related hair loss.

For many years, scientists believed androgenetic alopecia was caused by testosterone but recent findings suggest that it’s actually dihydrotestosterone, or DHT, that maybe the root of the problem. Hormones are a delicate balance and a simple or even a small imbalance can cause disruption. DHT is one possible cause for both men and women. While women have low levels of testosterones and DHT, even a small fraction of a raise in DHT levels can trigger hair loss in women.

Hair loss can also be caused by a thyroid hormone imbalance or hormone imbalances during or following pregnancy, disease and certain medication use. Hormones are cyclical and in some men, drop by 10% every decade after age 30. In women, hormone levels decline as menopause approaches and drop sharply during. Because of these cycles and changes, hair loss can experience short term increases.

Birth control pills can cause hair loss in women, especially those sensitive to the pill or who have a family history of hormone-related hair loss. The pill suppresses ovulation with the hormones estrogen and progestin. If hair loss is of particular concern, it’s recommended to use low-androgen index birth control pills. Birth control methods that can cause or worsen hair loss are: hormone injections(such as Depo-Provera), skin patches, progestin implants and vaginal rings.
